The Day, In Order

The 7:00 a.m. high-speed train from Gare Montparnasse puts you in Saint-Malo mid-morning, where your driver-guide meets your train — and the first hour belongs to the corsair city itself: the granite sea walls, the old town within them, and the Brittany coast doing its dramatic-tide routine below.

Then the centerpiece. Legend says the archangel Michael appeared to a monk named Saint Aubert and inspired what became one of the great pilgrimage sites of medieval Europe: an abbey rising from a tidal island where the bay’s water can climb more than 30 feet. You’ll have roughly three hours — climb the 300 steps to the monastery at your own pace, walk the Gothic halls and cloisters at the top, then come down through the village lanes for lunch and the ramparts. Low tide stretches sand flats to the horizon; high tide makes it an island again. Either version photographs like nowhere else in France.

The day closes gently in Dinan, a centuries-old trading town of half-timbered houses, winding lanes, and cafés built for exactly this hour of the afternoon. Then it’s back to the Saint-Malo station for the evening train — in Paris by about 10:05 p.m.
